Matching metals across pieces

An engagement ring, a wedding band and later anniversary gifts sit side by side, so pick the metal once and carry it through. How band width affects the size that fits

A wide band covers more of the finger and passes over the knuckle less easily, so it can feel tighter than a narrow band marked the same size. If you measured using a thin ring or a paper strip, a wide band may need a half size up. Measure at the end of the day, when fingers are at their largest, and measure the exact finger the ring will sit on. Sizing for a surprise proposal

The most reliable approach is to borrow a ring they already wear on that finger and compare it against the sizes in the ring size guide. Failing that, a sibling or close friend with similar hands can measure that finger using the same guide, keeping in mind that a borrowed ring's width may differ from the band you plan to buy.
